Why Is My AC Not Cooling Properly?

Air-conditioning unit being checked by a Best Fix technician

When an AC stops cooling, topping up refrigerant is often the first thing people ask for. But gas only runs low if there's a leak — and there are several more common culprits worth ruling out first.

The usual causes

A clogged filter or dirty coil is the number-one reason for weak airflow — dust chokes the system and cooling drops. Beyond that, a blocked condensate drain, a failing capacitor, a tripped breaker, or a thermostat set or wired incorrectly can all stop a unit from cooling properly.

A genuine gas leak is possible too, but a technician should trace and repair the leak — not simply refill it, which only hides the problem for a few weeks.

What you can check first

Clean or replace the filter, make sure the outdoor unit is clear of dust and obstructions, and confirm the thermostat is set to cool at a sensible temperature. If cooling is still weak after that, it's time for a proper inspection.
